What is Retinol? The Beginner's Guide to Using Retinol and Tips You Need To Know

If you look at the ingredients of almost any skincare product, you will notice that a common element is retinol. Retinol is also known as Vitamin A. It can work wonders in preventing signs of aging.

Retinol has gone through extensive testing in the cosmetics community. To back up the claim of the ingredient being a great addition to skincare products, which makes it a trusted additive.

How to Use Products with Retinol

Now that you understand what retinol is, you can focus on becoming a master of using products that include this ingredient. Here are a few suggestions to keep in mind:

  • Avoid pairing it with alpha-hydroxy acids

Alpha-hydroxy acids and retinol do not pair well together. Instead of giving your skin a natural glow. Combining these two ingredients will dry out your skin which can lead to cracked skin and an unappealing appearance.

  • Keep an eye out for side effects

Although retinol holds fantastic effects for most people, there is a small number of consumers who have an adverse reaction to it. If you find yourself in this category, you can use a gentle exfoliator a few times a week to soften your skin before you apply this ingredient.

  • Be conscious of sun exposure

Extended exposure to UV rays can wreak havoc on your skin and counteract the positive impact of using retinol. While it’s impossible to negate sun exposure, especially during the spring or summer, it’s recommended that you always use spf when you go out. This will help to keep your skin protected and reduce the possibility of developing wrinkles.

  • It’s available over the counter

You don’t need to jump through hoops to obtain a product that contains vitamin a. You can simply go down to your local beauty supply store and make your selection. Retinol is available through a prescription like adapalene or tretinoin, however, these options is only for severe cases.

  • Ask for help

There is no shortage of products available that include this ingredient. If you’ve never used a product with retinol in it before, it can be easy to feel overwhelmed by your options.

Before you invest in a product, you should speak to a skincare specialist who can assess your skin and point you in the right direction.
